UWM Pocket Park

The project commenced with Billy’s aspiration to recreate historical scenes that resonate with the rich Chinese heritage of University of Wisconsin-Madison. His initial site preference was Alumni Park, a place of historical significance as the former hub of the UW-Madison Chinese Student Association.

Following consultations and evaluations, including insights from James regarding the complexity of modifying Alumni Park, alternative locations were considered. The team reviewed potential sites including Henry Mall and a space near the Engineering Building. Given the historical association of Chinese students with the Engineering discipline and the spatial advantages, the site near the Engineering Building was selected.

The moodboard features an array of natural elements collected from the campus, with a special focus on ginkgo leaves, symbolizing the deep-rooted connections and mutual growth between the two cultures. These elements are thoughtfully incorporated to reflect both the historical significance and the aesthetic values of traditional Chinese landscapes.
